The Cathedral School Open Day & Boarding Experience
If you have ever passed by the tall green hedges of The Cathedral School on Ross River Road, you may have wondered what lies beyond. Each year, the school opens its gates to the wider community to showcase its beautiful campus and amazing facilities. Whether you’ve been curious about the campus, or the curriculum, this year’s Open Day will provide an opportunity for everyone to explore what’s beyond the gates.
The first thing new visitors notice is the natural lagoon scattered with a wide variety of birdlife, followed by the towering raintrees which have been providing much needed shade around the lagoon and surrounds for almost 160 years.
Our boarding students experience this amazing view every day during the school term, and you will often find them fishing in the lagoon in the evening when they’re not engaged in one of the numerous activities provided by Tom, our activities coordinator. For families considering boarding, the open day also includes a ‘boarding experience’ where students can live like a boarder for the weekend, allowing students to connect with the other boarders and boarding staff. The boarding experience program is full of fun activities and games around the school campus and around Townsville such as ten-pin bowling, laser tag and BBQ’s by The Strand. As a part of our ‘Boarding Experience’ students have the opportunity to stay the night in the dorms or visit just for the day.
The Open Day program includes a guided tour of the school or the option to explore at your own pace following the Open Day Trail. Along the trail you can explore school exhibits, participate in workshops, watch sporting demonstrations, experience dance, voice, drama, and musical performances, and learn more about what The Cathedral School offers during the information sessions presented by the heads of school.
Kids also love getting their Open Day passport stamped at checkpoints around the school, and receiving an Open Day showbag to take home at the end of the day. For the parents, there will be a coffee van on campus along with the student operated ‘Raintree Café’ offering baked goods, frappés and more.
An exciting addition to this year’s Open Day will be the opening of the ‘innovation hub’ – a cutting-edge technology and collaboration space that will focus on ICT, STEM and entrepreneurial innovation. The new building will nurture students for the careers of tomorrow and also facilitate the schools link to industry through the ‘Gateway to Industry Schools Program (GISP).
So don’t be left wondering. Visit The Cathedral School on Saturday May 21 and see why we are one of the leading schools in North Queensland.
